An Enchanting Dream Inspires a Painting | If Art Were Music

This is a painting I always come back to. I think about it often. It is titled, Dreams Luna. I created this piece in 2020 during the Drawlloween.

Drawlloween is a challenge hosted by Mabs Graves. It takes place on Instagram every year during Halloween. It’s such a fun time.

I can’t remember what the prompt was for that particular day, so I am not entirely sure if it was ‘Undead’ when I posted this or ‘haunted.’ However, I didn’t paint this on that particular day. This scene came to me many weeks prior to that. It appear in my dreams and felt very surreal, almost magical. I saw ‘smoke,’ the figures seemed to be made out of mist or smoke of some kind. As I traveled to this mist like place, I came upon this scene, and it almost felt like I was sneaking. Taking a peek into an intimate moment between two beings. It was a very odd dream with quite a lot of mystery.

I felt compelled to paint this surreal scene, and as I sketched, the soundtrack for this piece came to me. Leopold Stokowski's "A Night on Bald Mountain," featured in Disney's Fantasia, embodied the essence of my dream. If you haven’t heard it, it is part of the Disney’s 1940 an animated musical anthology film, Fantasia.

Perhaps this song came to mind because of its accompanying animation, in which a gargoyle-like creature arises from a mountain on Hallows night. This creature bears some resemblance to the one I saw in my dreams, though the one in my dream was not as menacing.

Even though my time-lapse of the painting is lost, I encourage you to watch and listen to the music as you observe this piece.

I’ve always imagined my artworks as tiny glimpses into other worlds. A personal invitation for the curious to see more.
With the hope that my paintings will carry the observer away into another world. Whether it be in a cozy café, a charming bookshop, or a mystic dreamlike sort of place. Similar to what a fantastic book would. A special kind of escape through my artwork.
